This month, we’re thrilled to showcase the work of Gyotaku artist Dennis Moore on our feature wall.
Gyotaku (pronounced "Gio-ta-ku") is the Japanese art of fish printing. Dennis creates his striking prints using a direct technique - applying non-toxic acrylic paint to freshly caught fish or shellfish, then pressing rice paper or muslin fabric over the top to capture every intricate detail. Once the print is made, he meticulously paints in the eye and finer details, staying true to the traditions of Gyotaku while lending his own artistic touch.
A former fish biologist and lifelong outdoorsman, Dennis is passionate about conservation and sustainability. He follows a philosophy of good resource stewardship, ensuring that nothing goes to waste—his catches are enjoyed as meals after the art is complete. Through his work, he preserves and shares the experience of fishing in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Come see Dennis’ incredible fish prints in person throughout April.
